Echinacea: What is it and what does it do?

Echinacea is a very popular herbal remedy and offers an array of benefits. Many cultures have in fact used the herb for centuries in order to promote health, and it is still just as popular today for curing all sorts of minor ailments.

Echinacea is also sometimes called coneflower and is found in both meadows and wet valleys in the Midwestern United States. The wildflower is extremely famous for its medicinal ingredients but also because of its appearance. The flower itself is a beautiful striking purple hue and appears in many gardens solely because of its looks!

Echinacea is used mainly to increase the running of the immune system. It does this by motivating the white blood cells. These are the cells used to attack both viruses and bacteria. Both viruses and bacteria can lead to either illness or infection, which in turn leads to a run-down immune system.

Echinacea is very beneficial to those that have extremely weak immune systems; this could be due to a certain illness, age, general immune system deficiency, or if you are recovering from a previous sickness.

If you are suffering from the likes of the common cold then echinacea is your go-to health food supplement. It has also recently been proven to aid as an antiviral, which in turn also helps fight unwanted infection.

As well as taking the supplement internally, echinacea can also be used externally for certain skin conditions, such as eczema; this is great news for those that suffer from the ailment but prefer to use a natural remedy as opposed to a medicated substance.

Echinacea is available from most health food stores and can be purchased over the counter. It can also be bought as a tea, which offers an easy way to take the herbal medicine and can be taken at various times of the day.
