What you need to know about Avoiding Exercise Injuries

I love exercise, I love the way it makes me feel and how it makes my body look. If I go without exercising for too long, I start to feel lethargic and a bit down. For me, surfing is my passion. Of course it’s exercise, but for me, it’s more like a mindset and a way of living.

While I could talk all day about how I feel about surfing, the reason for my blog today is to share a little accident I recently had. The take home message for people is: always take your safety seriously and if you do injure yourself, take that even more seriously.

You see recently, my board and I got a little too up close and personal with each other, after some killer breaks got the better of me. Standing on the beach, I was dazed and confused, and oh yeah, bleeding. Because my surfboard also hit me in the head, I didn’t think it was too serious and didn’t do anything about it. Well, that was an error.

After almost a week of sinus pain, not to mention that my once relatively straight nose was now more crooked than my walk after a big night out, I finally decided to see my doctor. She told me that I had indeed broken my nose and would probably need surgery.

While I’ve always been pretty cynical and I guess critical about cosmetic surgery, I just had to do something about my nose. Apart from the impact it had on my sinus passages (not good I can tell you), it just wasn’t me looking back at myself in the mirror anymore. I wanted the old me back, nose and all.

I rang my Mum who’s a nurse and she encouraged me to see someone like Dr Woods, who’s an experienced and reputable plastic surgeon to talk about my ‘nose job’ or rhinoplasty. Before speaking with her, I didn’t realise that in Australia, any doctor can perform cosmetic surgery and call themself a ‘surgeon’, without having actual surgery training and experience. Unfortunately, my health insurance didn’t cover this procedure and I had to go through the public hospital system and wait.

Because I had to wait several weeks for my surgery, my nose had already started to naturally mend. This meant that the surgeon had to considerably ‘reposition’ the cartilage and this ended up make the operation a bit more involved and longer than it needed to be.

So the bandages are off and the swelling’s gone down and I’ve got my old nose back, well almost, it’s not entirely perfect. The whole experience has been a real wake up call for me, to take my exercise and sport, particularly potential accidents and injuries a little more seriously. I’ve also upgraded my health insurance as I would have preferred to see a private surgeon of my choice. I think I may have ended up with a better outcome with the shape and outline of nose if I’d done this, along with having seen a doctor straight after the accident. This hasn’t stopped me from doing what I love, but I guess I’m a little more cautious now and probably take safer risks, if that makes sense! I hope sharing this might encourage you to do the same.
